Was ist Realität und was ist die Darstellung von Realität? Die Frage nach dem „Echten“, die in Joseph Kosuths Arbeit „One and Three Chairs“ gestellt wird – findet sich in diesen Interventionen wieder.

Ein Bild ist eine Darstellung von Etwas – in diesem Fall eines Baumes. Oft werden Bilder als Ersatz für die Dinge verwendet, die sie abbilden. Die Interventionen auf der finnischen Halbinsel Lauttasaari werfen Fragen auf: Gibt es so etwas wie eine echte Natur? Wie würde die Welt ohne Eingriffe des Menschen aussehen? Welche Bäume bleiben erhalten und werden kultiviert, welche werden abgeholzt, welche Wälder wurden ausgewählt, um unberührt zu bleiben? Und was bedeutet „Natur“ überhaupt?

Durch das Anbringen einer Fotografie der Baumrinde auf der fotografierten Baumrinde selbst wird der Unterschied zwischen dem realen und dem abgebildeten Baum offensichtlich. Was geht durch die Repräsentation verloren und was wird gewonnen? Und was bedeutet „real“?

What is reality and what is representation of reality? Like Joseph Kosuth questioned the „real“ in his artwork „one and three chairs“ – this artwork questions representation. An image is a representation of something – in this case a tree. Often, images are used as a substitute for the things they represent. Is there such a thing as real nature anymore? This world would look completely different if there were no human interventions in it. Which trees get chosen to be cultivated, which ones are cut down, which forests are chosen to stay untouched – and what does “nature” mean nowadays? By placing the image of a tree on the bark of the photographed tree, the difference between the real and the mediated tree becomes obvious. What is lost and what is gained through representation – and what does „real“ mean anyway?
